A New Life, Chapter 8
Breakfast was silent and awkward, as usual. The difference was that the awkwardness wasn’t just between him and Melisha, but between her and Jackie as well. The tension was so thick, you could cut it with a knife. An occasional cough or scuffle of feet were all the noise that was made.
“How did it go last night?” Willard asked in a brief aside. Jackie cringed.
“Don’t ask.”
And that was all that was said on the matter. That was all that needed to be said.

It wasn’t that much of a surprise when the door opened to reveal the nervous young man on Saturday night. Willard smiled. “Oh! You must be Gromit. Please, come in, have a seat. Jackie had a little bit of a…personal emergency.”
“What do you mean, every month?!” The indignant cry came from upstairs. The two men looked at each other and exchanged awkward smiles.
“Ahem. Can I get you anything? Tea, maybe?”
Gromit shook his head, taking a seat on the nearby couch. He starting fidgeting nervously. It was then Willard noticed something. “Flowers? How kind.”
Gromit nodded.

Ginger didn’t know exactly why it felt like she was walking on air, or why it felt like there were little butterflies in her heart. But she rather liked the feeling. Liked it so much, not even Mrs. Tweedy’s glare could bring her down. Granted, it did come awfully close.
“What’s got you skipping around like a ninny?”
“Oh,” Ginger blushed. “A boy asked me to see a play with him on Saturday.”
“Is he rich?”
Ginger blinked. “I…don’t know.”
Mrs. Tweedy let out a small, uninterested “hm.” “Did you get the things I asked you?”

She had seen this place before. Rolling hills…cool, green grass…a running stream…this was the place of her dreams. She visited it often when she slept, enjoying the freedoms real life didn’t allow her. This time was different, however, and not only because she was human.
This time, she wasn’t alone.
The man in front of her wasn’t exactly young, but he wasn’t exactly old, either. He was smiling at her, sitting down on a blanket by the stream. “I can see why you like it here so much. It’s very peaceful.”
“Do I…know you?” Ginger asked.
“Not directly.”

Oh. So this is what hell feels like.
Ginger’s legs ached from standing still, but the humans around her insisted she had to remain perfectly still while they “measured” her. She wasn’t aware this was how humans got their second skins. If she was, she might have been a little more resistant when Mrs. Tweedy insisted on taking her “shopping.” She was fairly certain the experience should be delegated to the eighth or ninth ring of the blazing inferno. Not be made an everyday ordeal.
“Ok,” the human hen who had been taking her measurements finally said, writing down her finds. “You should fi

I’ll give humans this…they are clever creatures, Ginger decided as she slipped on the boots Mrs. Tweedy had given her. Boots that were supposed to protect her feet, apparently. She stood from off the couch, brushing the dress Mrs. Tweedy had given her. More out of nervousness than anything else. She sighed once more as she opened the front door.
“…can’t believe you let her out!” Mrs. Tweedy reprimanded, slapping Willard on the back of his head. Ginger was puzzled as she walked down the stairs, until she realized where they were looking.
They were looking in the coal bin.

It had been quite the sight when he noticed his wife tearing through the closet as he got out of bed that morning. Especially since she was already dressed. He bit his lip, trying to think of a way to say it. “Are…are you alright?” He didn’t want to say it too fast in case she got angry. Mrs. Tweedy sighed.
“I’m trying to find something for the girl in the bath. We’re built so differently…”
Willard blinked. “There’s a girl in the bath?”
Mrs. Tweedy grabbed a dress and glared at him. “Yes, Mr. Tweedy. I found her wandering around the yard naked, and covered in dus
